Amsoil VS Mobil     Oil Viscosity Explained

"Nothing Outperforms Mobil 1" or "Nothing Performs Like Mobil 1"

These are the slogans for Mobil 1. While they are catchy phrases how well do they hold up?

Mobil 1 had a 25,000 Mile Full Synthetic Oil Back In 1974

Mobil 1 marketed and sold a full synthetic oil back in 1974 with 25,000 mile extended drain intervals.

Here is a link to the information on the Wikipedia site. Mobil 1 25,000 Mile Synthetic Oil A 25,000 mile

oil from Mobil back in 1974.  I find it interesting that they did continue to sell the oil but did not openly

market it as a 25,000 mile oil. What I find even more strange is the fact that the Mobil 1 or now the Exxon

Mobil website has a history time line of products that show a synthetic oil produced in 1974, but no mention

of the 25,000 mile drain interval.  With an advancement like that why wouldn't you put that on your website?

Scroll down to 1974 to see for yourself.  Mobil 1 product history time line. You can come up with some of

your own conclusions on why Mobil 1 only briefly sold and marketed this oil for 25,000 mile drain intervals,

and fails to show it as part of their impressive history. You have to sell a lot of oil to have the top ten quarterly earnings of all time.

You've never seen an oil like this before. Mobil 1 Extended Performance is a high-endurance motor oil designed for longer service intervals

This above statement is from the first paragraph, first two sentences off the Mobil 1 Extended Performance Page.  How can Mobil 1 make a statement like this when they had a product back in 1974 that was recommended for 25,000 mile drain intervals.  Mobil 1 Extended Performance Synthetic Oil is a 15,000 mile drain oil, that I believe was introduced in 2005.  Mobil 1 Extended Performance was introduced some 31 years later with a drain interval that is 10,000 miles less! All I can say is that you have to sell a lot of oil to have the top ten quarterly earnings of all time.

Amsoil had a 25,000 Mile or 1 Year Full Synthetic Oil in 1972
Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil is a 15,000 mile oil that was introduced in 2005, 33 years after Amsoil had a 25,000
mile one year oil. Amsoil has a pretty impressive history as well and has been a pioneer, and quite simply can be proud to say they are "The First in Synthetics®" and the leader in synthetic lubricants and extended drain intervals.

Mobile 1 Extended Performance Guarantee

"Improvements that add up to exceptional protection for 15,000 miles. Guaranteed."  <<<<Click here for the guarantee. I would like to point out the fourth sentence regarding the guarantee if the vehicle is under warranty.  I am not sure what Mobil is saying, it's a bit vague.  Are they stating they will not honor the guarantee if the car is under warranty?  If that is the case, why?  I don't have the answer, contact them and see what their reply is.  Here is the link to post a question for Mobil.

How Does Mobil Respond To Our Tests Against Their Oils

How has Mobil responded to the testing that we have done with our oil compared to theirs.  From reading over the posts I can only gather that the ASTM tests we use to measure our oils doesn't mean anything to Mobil and that apparently laboratory data isn't important either and that only real world testing is important, and how many new cars come factory filled with Mobil! I feel that laboratory testing coupled with real world testing is a true measure of an oils overall performance. Here is a link to the Ask Mobil page where people have asked questions regrading Amsoil VS Mobil. If the link does not work go to http://www.mobiloil.com/ and on the upper right hand side of the page you will see a box with "search the site", then type Amsoil in that box.  Upon reading the information posted you will see a link to a video entitled  "Mobil 1 Put to Test in Las Vegas Taxi Cab Fleet". I think the results Mobil got were great!  What I really do not see is any specifications or measurements for wear on the engine pulled apart.  I do think Mobil is a great oil, but I believe Amsoil is better

and would like to provide you the tests to back it up.

AMSOIL Extends Oil Life

Thin Film Oxygen Uptake Test - ASTM D-4742

The Thin Film Oxygen Uptake Test (TFOUT) is used to evaluate engine oil’s ability to resist heat and oxygen breakdown when contaminated with oxidized/nitrated fuel, water, and soluble metals such as lead, copper, iron, manganese and silicon. This test is designed to mimic the operating conditions of a gasoline engine. AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil has superior heat and oxidation resistance to control sludge deposits and extend oil life. Engines stay clean for maximum protection and oil changes are reduced, saving time and money.

Maximizes Fuel Economy, Reduces Oil Consumption and Emissions

NOACK Volatility Test - ASTM D-5800

The NOACK Volatility Test determines the evaporation loss of lubricants in high temperature service. The more motor oils vaporize, the thicker and heavier they become, contributing to poor circulation, reduced fuel economy and increased oil consumption, wear and emissions. AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil resists high temperature volatilization (evaporation) better than other motor oils. AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil maintains peak fuel efficiency and reduces oil consumption and emissions.

Improves Cold Temperature Startup

Pour Point - ASTM D-97

The Pour Point Test determines the lowest temperature at which a lubricant will flow. The lower a lubricant’s pour point, the better protection it provides in low temperature service. Unlike conventional oils that solidify in cold temperatures, AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Motor oil remains fluid down to -58° F. AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil helps engines turn over easier and flows quickly to engine parts for critical start-up protection. Engines start faster and wear is greatly reduced for extended engine life.

Controls Acid Formation

Total Base Number - ASTM D-2896

Total Base Number (TBN) is the measurement of a lubricant’s reserve alkalinity, which aids in the control of acids formed during the combustion process. The higher a motor oil’s TBN, the more effective it is in suspending wear-causing contaminants and reducing the corrosive effects of acids over an extended period of time. The high TBN of AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil allows it to effectively combat wear-causing contaminants and acids, providing superior protection and performance over extended drain intervals.

Helps Engines Start Easier

Cold Cranking Viscosity - ASTM D-5293

The Cold Crank Simulator Test determines the apparent viscosity of lubricants at low temperatures and high shear rates. Viscosity of lubricants under these conditions is directly related to engine cranking and starting ability. The lower a lubricant’s cold crank viscosity, the easier an engine will turn over in cold temperatures. The low cold crank viscosity of AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil reduces drag on moving engine parts and allows engines to achieve critical cranking speed in extremely frigid temperatures. Engines turn over

quickly and dependably in the coldest winter temperatures.

Protects Against Wear

Four-Ball Wear - ASTM D-4172

The Four-Ball Wear Test evaluates the protection provided by engine oil under conditions of pressure and sliding motion. The size of the scar left as a result of the test determines the amount of wear protection the lubricant provides. The smaller the wear scar, the better the protection. Tests show that AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil has better anti-wear performance than all other oils tested. With AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil, engine life can be extended and major repairs are often reduced.

Saves Money

Cost Per 25,000 Miles

By extending oil drain intervals through its premium formulation, AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil saves drivers money. A value comparison shows AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil costs less than competing motor oils over 25,000 miles. While competing motor oils must be changed up to five times over 25,000 miles, AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil is only changed once, saving both time and money.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

By combining the industry premier synthetic technology with AMSOIL premium additives, AMSOIL 10W-30 exceeds the higher performance demands of modern engines. It withstands the stress of higher horsepower, higher heat and complicated emission control systems. AMSOIL Synthetic

10W-30 Motor Oil consistently outperforms competitive conventional and synthetic motor oils. It delivers long-lasting performance and protection. AMSOIL, the leader in automotive synthetic lubrication, produced the world’s first API qualified synthetic motor oil in 1972. Trust the extensive experience of AMSOIL The First in Synthetics® to do the best job protecting your vehicle.

Extends Drain Intervals
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil can extend drain intervals far beyond those recommended for conventional oils. Its unique synthetic formulation and long drain additive system are very stable, resisting oxidation and neutralizing acids. AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 delivers the best possible engine protection, cleanliness and performance over extended drain intervals, reducing vehicle maintenance and waste oil

disposal costs.

Maximizes Fuel Economy
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil is designed to maximize energy efficiency for improved fuel economy. Unlike conventional oils, its uniform molecular structure helps it flow more freely and reduce friction between metal surfaces. Anti-friction additives are included to further improve energy efficiency.

Reduces Engine Wear
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil provides outstanding anti-wear protection. It has excellent viscosity film strength to separate metal surfaces and robust anti-wear additives to further reduce wear in metal-to-metal contact regions for improved engine life.

Reduces Oil Consumption and Emissions
Evaporation (volatility) occurs when oil gets hot, causing high oil consumption and emissions. AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil has the lowest evaporation rate of the oils tested, making it the best at controlling evaporation-related oil consumption and emissions (see chart).

Excels in Extreme Temperatures
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil resists thermal (heat) breakdown better than conventional oils. It is heavily fortified with detergent and dispersant additives to prevent sludge deposits and keep engines clean. And unlike conventional oils, AMSOIL ATM contains no wax. It stays fluid down to -48°C (-54°F) for improved cold temperature oil flow, reduced bearing wear and easier starting (see chart).

APPLICATIONS:
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil is recommended for use in gasoline engines and other applications requiring any of the listed worldwide specifications:

  • API SM/CF, SL, SJ ...
  • ILSAC GF-4, 3 ...
  • ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5
  • JASO VTW
  • GM 4718M, 6094M
  • Ford WSS-M2C205-A
  • Daimler Chrysler MS-6395N
  • VW 503.00

MIXING AMSOIL
AMSOIL ATM is compatible with conventional and synthetic motor oils. Mixing AMSOIL motor oils with other oils, however, will shorten the oil life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits. AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL motor oils.

SERVICE LIFE
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals in unmodified(1), mechanically sound(2) gasoline fueled vehicles as follows:

• Normal Service(3) – Up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

• Severe Service(4) – Up to 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

• Replace AMSOIL Ea full-flow oil filter at the time of oil change up to 25,000 miles or one year service life, whichever comes first (other brands at standard OEM* intervals).

• In all other applications, extend the oil change interval according to oil analysis or follow the OEM* drain interval.

*OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer

(1) Engines operating under modified conditions are excluded from extended drain recommendations. Examples include the use of performance computer chips; non-OEM approved exhaust, fuel or air induction systems; and the use of fuels other than those recommended for normal operation by the manufacturers.

(2) Engines are in good working condition and within the factory design settings. Mechanically sound engines, for example, do not leak oil or consume excessive amounts, are not worn out, do not overheat, do not have internal or external anti-freeze leaks and have properly working emission control systems. AMSOIL recommends repairing malfunctioning engines prior to the installation of AMSOIL synthetic oils.

(3) Personal transportation vehicles frequently traveling greater than 10 miles (16 km) at a time and not operating under severe service.

(4) Turbo/supercharged vehicles, commercial or fleet vehicles, excessive engine idling, use of AMSOIL engine oil in vehicles with over 100,000 miles without prior regular use of AMSOIL engine oil, daily short trip driving (less than 10 miles), frequent towing, plowing, hauling or dusty-condition driving.

AMSOIL Ea full-flow oil filters are designed for extended drain intervals. They stop smaller particles, flow more oil and last longer than regular filters.

For best performance, use AMSOIL full-flow oil filters.

As you can see Amsoil will produce their test results against the competition.  They will do this and others will not, why? The others will not provide this kind of information because they know they don't measure up.

"Our Company makes the best lubricants in the world, period, and challenges anyone or any company to prove us wrong! That won't happen because our competitors know it's true." -A.J. Amatuzio, President & CEO. of Amsoil

They say things like we are the factory fill, or look how many people in NASCAR use it. Do you think the oils the NASCAR teams use is the same oil that you can purchase right off your retail shelf? I wouldn't be so sure, highly unlikely! Actually I went to the ASK Mobil page and posted this question a while back and yet to have an answer! I would guess (just speculation) the oils the NASCAR teams use are not shelf brand oil from any manufacturer.  These oils are most likely special formulations per application.  I will say that the Amsoil oils, racing, diesel or any product performs per the specifications and/or the warranty that is stated on the bottles or the website.

Also when Amsoil sponsors a team of any kind they use the same product that you and I can purchase directly from Amsoil or a dealer. No special formulations!  Click here to see the of the Amsoil sponsored race teams.  While you are on this page take a look at the co-op sponsored race teams, and Amsoil Racers of the Past.

My hope is that you found this page informal to help make a decision to purchase Amsoil. An oil that provides results, whether it be in tests - lab, real life, or comparative, and has been proven to deliver time and time again.  A company that went out on a limb back in 1972 with a 25,000 mile drain oil when everyone else was pushing the 3,000 standard that is still so prevalent today.  Amsoil has stuck behind this since 1972 when it wasn't popular.  Even now in (2010) people have a hard time believing that we have an oils that can go from 7,500 to 35,000 miles under normal service, and 7,500 to 17,500 under severe service, and on top of it provide a warranty with these extended drain intervals.  Every year we will continue to grow because people will search out information like this, and the auto industry is really making a shift towards synthetic lubrication and extended drain intervals past 3,000 miles. People are and should be concerned about oil consumption.  This will continue to help Amsoil because people should and will recognize Amsoil as the a leader, and pioneer in synthetic lubricants.  Amsoil, A company that has been dedicated since its beginning (not when it's convenient) to sell the best products, not to sell the most oil!
